No More Bonfires

Date posted: Thursday 27th September 2018

Please note that with immediate effect there will be no more bonfires on plots. If you have dry organic matter that cannot be composted, you can burn it in the incinerator.

This has been a difficult decision to reach, but our hand has been forced by the small number of plotholders who persist – despite constant appeals – in burning wet stuff, creating smoke that is a nuisance to neighbours and a hazard to drivers on Park Road/Church Grove. We’re sorry this will inconvenience the responsible majority, but it’s also part of a wider trend – trying to improve air quality and returning all that vegetable goodness to the soil rather than sending it up in smoke.

We are in the process of getting a new, more efficient incinerator. We also hope to be running some composting workshops. If you have any questions or suggestions, get in touch with the Plotholders’ Committee.

Please take this ban seriously. We would view any fires on plots in future as detrimental to the well-being of the allotments, and clause 4 of our Constitution says that: “Any member who acts in a manner which is or is likely to be detrimental to the well-being or efficient management of the association or acts in contravention of the conditions of tenancy or any term contained in the tenancy agreement, may have their membership terminated.”
