Mini Beast, quiz, frogspawn, spring flowers

Well, no sooner had the ‘Beast from the East’ snows melted away when we had another weekend of it – this time a mini version, unfortunately coinciding with our first quiz during Sunday’s café! But the spirit of Dunkirk prevailed, committee member Ashley duly reported for office duty and enough stalwart hardy types turned up for the quiz to be a goer! The café has never been so quiet, with teams huddled over their quiz papers trying to work out what ‘A message from a cucumber’ and ‘a Scottish flyer’ could be among others of 20 questions about veg, fruit and herbs (answers below!).

The first batches of frogspawn from a couple of weeks ago have had to endure bitterly cold conditions and iced pond tops. When I checked a couple of days ago the female had obviously been making up for lost time – 11 clumps! Yesterday the first batch were hatching out and the tiny tadpoles were beginning to move and flick their tales slowly about. Some of the frogspawn had either not been fertilised or been damaged by the ice cover as they were white, like little seed pearls (at the top left of the photo). There’s never been so much spawn in my pond…

Yesterday it became a little milder, although the ground is still very cold – first early spuds were put in and the honey bees were buzzing around the flowering pulmonaria – such a valuable plant for providing early foraging opportunities and such a pretty plant, along with the narcissi, hellebores, hyacinths and snowdrops that are now in full bloom in my mini woodland garden under the old apple tree..
